Seattle Mayor Ed Murray will announce Wednesday afternoon he has selected the Oak View Group, led by Tim Leiweke and Irving Azoff, to spearhead a $564 million gut remodel of KeyArena.
NBA spokesman Mike Bass sajd "The NBA is not involved in the ongoing Seattle arena process, and we have no plans to expand at this time.”

“We have seven new projects on the drawing board right now,” he said. “If you look at new arenas or stadiums, they tend to get built based on the anchor tenant, based on the sports team that needs a new facility. But there are really great markets out there, take Seattle for example, where we believe Seattle doesn’t have to have an NBA or NHL team.”

“We believe that there is no franchise today in the National Hockey League or in the National Basketball Association that is in danger of being lost as an opportunity over the next few years. And we believe that should Gary Bettman make a decision to expand, that if you look at the last process they just went through, it was a three- to four-year process to get that building built and to get that team up and running this next season.”
If Leiweke is right, and his group wins the bidding, then it’s possible that the NHL could expand to 32 teams with a Seattle franchise for the 2021-22 or 2022-23 season. Leiweke stated that he further believes an NBA franchise could follow to join that team in Key Arena, ending Seattle’s NBA absence that has endured since the end of the 2007-08 season.

So look for an NHL expansion team soon after the city approves a contract with any arena group. In the end, it would take big-time marketing to sell the NHL in a town where there is little interest in the Stanley Cup Final.

Levine: "Several years - would you worry about an opportunity for an NHL team passing you by if that were the case?"
Murray: "I believe that if we have a viable arena proposal on the table, then an NHL team will be here."
