Q: When people from the outside see attendance what it is — and it’s been this way for a couple of years — you can understand the thought of how long can a business sustain itself in this particular manner before something has to happen?
A: Before this last CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) the economics of our business was that 70 percent of your revenue came from your gates. Now with the new agreement that number is in the 30 percent range. Revenue sharing used to be $6-7 million per team and now it’s much, much greater than that. The league has done a tremendous job of assisting the teams that were not going to be in a market like some of our competitors. Salary cap in our league plus the revenue sharing works very well for all 30 teams.

It’s going to be harder to get a grasp on the Carolina Hurricanes’ annual finances.
Gale Force Sports & Entertainment, the team’s parent company, will no longer report two annual hockey-related revenue figures to the Centennial Authority, the PNC Arena landlord – the amount received by the team from the NHL and from its local television contract.
Gale Force requested the change, approved by the authority finance committee Nov. 10, saying those figures were “proprietary trade secret information.” The authority’s annual financial report, which is not an audit, is submitted to determine the amount of arena rent owed by Gale Force to the authority each year – $2.45 million in 2016.

« On a un mécanisme où nous sommes très ouverts avec la Ville. Mais il y a certains éléments qui doivent rester confidentiels », explique Benoît Robert, le président et chef de direction du Groupe Sport et divertissement de Québecor.

Now 72, Karmanos is still trying to peddle the team. He hired New York City-based investment bank Allen & Co. in May 2010 to handle a sale of some portion of the team.
Now, Karmanos wants to sell the entire franchise, but ensure it stays in Raleigh, N.C. However, Sports Illustrated reported in August that Karmanos’ desire to retain some level control of the team for a transition period after a sale prompted a local investment group to balk at buying the club.
Waddell confirme le 19 novembre
Q: Has Pete turned down any offers to buy the team?
A: (Pause) I would say that answer would be ‘no.’ We’ve some people look at it pretty hard, but we’ve never had to turn down an offer.

En 6 ans aucune offre pour garder l'équipe a Raleigh ?
The authority report for fiscal 2015 listed total revenue for “Hurricanes Hockey LP” as about $96 million, a slight dip from the $97.5 million in 2014. Hockey expenses were not listed.
Of those totals, which Waddell said included NHL revenue-sharing, NHL revenue was reported at $43.25 million in fiscal 2015, an increase of more than $3 million from fiscal 2014. Television revenue in each year was about $14.4 million.
Waddell would not release the NHL and television figures for fiscal 2016 on Thursday, but said the total revenue for the team was more than $100 million.
The latest Forbes NHL team valuations, released Wednesday, valued the Hurricanes at $230 million — last in the league — and its revenue at $99 million.
In explaining hockey revenue discrepancies, Waddell said the player escrow totals were not included in the report. A portion of a player’s salary is held in escrow each year, and the amount of money returned to the player based on the league’s revenue total for the year.
Waddell said the escrow totals for 2013-2014 weren’t settled until this past summer, saying, “That’s $8 million right off the bat.”
Q: Is there anything the league can do to help clubs that are being challenged from an attendance point of view or to identify other areas of concern?
A: The league is very aware of each team’s situation. The one thing they have access to is all of our numbers. There are a lot of franchises that need help putting people in their buildings. But, if you go and look at all the Novembers, when you take away your season ticket base — and our base is lower than it was eight years ago — we’re selling the same number of tickets.
Q: Long time season ticket holders are hearing the message of an improved team and the prospects of winning, but is there another way to convey those messages?
A: We increased our staff because of that. People used to hear from us twice a year, when we invoiced them. Now, every season ticket holder is going to get three or four visits in their seats during games and another three or four phone calls. The other thing we do is if you go two games without using your tickets you’re getting a phone call from us. ‘You haven’t been to the games, is there a problem? Can we help you move your tickets, donate your tickets? I think we’re in a much better position today than we’ve ever been to take advantage of an upswing and in the meantime managing our current customers and trying to increase that season ticket base.
We let our fans choose their games. If they buy a 22-game package or an 11-game package they pick the games. A good example is the Anaheim game (Thursday, Nov. 10). We have over 2,000 equivalents in partial plans, but we had only 30 people choose that game. Mid-week, against a team that nobody had any interest in, they pick them.Et si c'était les Hurricanes qui n'avaient aucun interet pour les gens de Raleigh ?
Waddell dit- il la vérité ?
The second half of the season is much more loaded than the front half.
